t r a n s f o r m a t o r y – experiencing the spring & summer of 2012

This season marks the re-definition of our dream, a transformation of our collaborative practice and an honoring of our creative callings.
It’s funny how we humans can set goals and get so blinded by the pursuit of achieving them that we lose sight of the essence of why we were taking steps towards them in the first place.
This season is dedicated to side stepping that common progress trap.

Light & Soul is ending its journey as a clothing company
but is beginning its journey as an arts collaborative.

During our adventure as a clothing company we were blessed to have had the opportunity to work with many talented and creative individuals, be involved within the lush and co-creative community vibe that is unfolding within Calgary, and be lucky enough to develop an arsenal of skills along the way. As we came to the end of our 4th year of playing the clothing game it was time to lock down a sustainable foundation for the company and step it up to play with the pros in the fashion industry. And after sitting down and doing some serious research and discovery as to the realities of creating a sustainable clothing company, we had to be brutally honest with ourselves and each other; we didn’t want to play a part in perpetuating the fashion industry.

It’s funny how hard it can be to discern what one is truly feeling and needing from what one “thinks” she/he should be feeling and needing.

All our support goes out to our friends within the industry or at the grassroots level following their passion and changing the game.
Howard Thurman once said: “Don’t ask what he world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

The lifestyle involved in the fashion industry, in perpetuating a mass-produced consumerist culture, was not an area we wanted to place our creative energy, it wasn’t making us come alive anymore.
So it was back to the drawing board, back to asking ourselves those important questions.
How do we wish to be living our day to day lives?
Where do we want to go?
How can we get there?
How can each of us play our individual piece in putting together this puzzle of living a dream?
And most importantly, how can this journey be as enjoyable as possible?

As we dove into these questions and got real with each other, common values and goals became apparent for Light & Soul. These were:

- Collaborating with each other and others in creative ways that allow for our most passionate selves to exercise themselves (organic collaboration)
- Cultivating community culture
- Supporting and sharing the stories of people living passionately
- Respecting and honoring our integral piece within the biosphere

With these at the core of Light & Soul’s essence we step forward, focused and prepared to let our creative potential unfold individually and collaboratively through art, design, murals and film.
Our goal is simply to cultivate community culture.
By attending and hosting sweet events and gatherings, while nurturing the growth and discovery of the interconnected web of relationships that form the community, and then collaborating within these resilient connections, we hope to play our piece in stewarding and regenerating this unique habitat we call home.

As a side quest (project) a few of us have started a company called Leaf Ninjas.
Leaf Ninjas is an urban farming and permaculture gardening team taking action and growing quality food in Calgary.
We will be growing some of the finest local and organic produce and cultivating sustainable gardens in order to help fuel the growing awareness of, and hunger for, a sustainable local food system.
We will be farming in the communities of Inglewood and Ramsay this season and will be collaborating with The Area to create a weekly farmers market.
For more info check out www.leafninjas.ca

Tis the year of transformation and change.
Some go as far as saying we are entering a “golden age” or second renaissance, but to say the least we are all just trying to find that beautiful balance.
As we individually discover what that means to us, we, as a community, will be holdin’ it down and figuring it out together.
And damn Calgary, you’re doing a mighty fine job.

Nothing but gratitude goes out to all who have come out and supported Light & Soul over the years,
all the people and organizations who have invested in our artistic visions,
all the shops who have been a keystone for our growth,
all the artists, musicians, riders and crazy creatives we have collaborated with and who embody the essence of what this company stands for,
all the hubs and communities from Cochrane to Airdrie, from Lethbridge to the Shushwap, from Vancouver to Victoria, from Whistler to all the gems in between who have embraced the potential of a ripple.
We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for you.
You’re an inspiration.
Keep on keepin’ on.

Much love
L&S

practice

The single frame is romantic. It’s intimate. there’s one snap to tell the story. As for film, photography is it’s roots.
Photography let’s you slow down, it’s the practice and a great place to understand composition, light cast and the gradient flow. To understand film and cinematography, it was obvious. Much like anything worth understanding in life, I had to find the roots, it’s origin, the single frame. For me it seems, you must master one, before you can master 24 a second.

a tree climb

… you continue upward. To your left and right the other trees of the forest thin out into peaks, you break through the canopy and sight extends for hundreds of kilometers in all directions. The sun fiercely hits your eyes. Up here the branches are thin and few and the giant creeks as it sways in the wind.

Your mind analyzes the moment: you are 100 feet in the air, the next branch is just out of reach, you will have to jump, any faulty move now and you will fall. This thought causes fear to enter your mind like a disease and your confidence falters. Panic takes its toll on your body, limbs shake, muscles grow weaker and twitch. You hold the trunk of the giant for dear life. In this moment your wildest fears become your reality, your reality becomes your wildest fears. But you believe that more is possible, you believe that today you can do what yesterday you could not.

All is silent for a moment as you jump. Now you are truly alive, blood pulsing, mind clear and body moving on instinct. You have stared your greatest fear in the eye. No longer allowing it to rule your life. You are free. You reach the top now moving fluidly and confidently and with one last breath, leap, spread your wings and fly. Your wildest dreams become your reality, your reality becomes your wildest dreams.

Sun Leaf Water VI

A regenerative lifestyle design

Like writing down your dreams and goals to help manifest them into reality, this painting is a step to manifest a regenerative lifestyle. Unlike mainstream lifestyles centered around degenerative consumption/waste and a disconnected perspective of self from the natural world, a regenerative lifestyle views an individual as an integral part of nature and the environment we live within and the goal of every action and thought to leave our space/habitat more fertile and more friendly then it was before. Through gardening, eating local and organic, voting with every dollar, being aware of every step we make through our day, smiling to our fellow earth walkers on the street and heaps of other things we regenerate a style of life that will bring about harmony within our habitats.

Sun Leaf Water is a life long mission of cultivating a community/ecosystem that embodies the regenerative lifestyle and shares the design with all who are courageous and curious enough to explore it. We have a lot to learn and discover on this journey but along this road we hope to collaborate with like minded people to manifest this dream; to pioneer a new way of living within earth. Sun Leaf Water would look like an off the grid community founded on love and respect for ourselves, each other and all of earth’s beings. Taping into the energies of the earth and the solar system that are renewable, bringing back the means of our own production, cultivating whole foods through food forests, hosting workshops to share regenerative lifestyle designs, allowing space for creative retreats and a center for holistic healing are just a few of the integral parts that will make up the infrastructure of Sun Leaf Water. Biomimicry will reconnect us with our tranquil ways we have forgotten.

Fuck sustainability we need regeneration

rediscovering “for the love”

It’s been a privilege to be able to spend the last week to really slow down, take some time for the self to read, to get out to the mountains, to re-adjust the shway in the crib and rock a sketch for the sake of drawing. I have been lucky enough to be able to live off of artwork and creative endeavors for the last year and a half now and it has been the biggest learning curve of my life/the most enjoyable education possible. But at the same time it has tested my passions.

Art turned into always creating “for something”  or “for someone”. Friends would always ask “What’s that piece for?”. I forgot to take the time to draw for the pure sake of drawing, to paint for the sake of painting, to create to create. No reason, no future demand of why I was doing what I was doing except the most honest and true form of expression. It’s like I gained back a piece of kidhood again.

So to all the passionate people out there living your dream: keep on keepin’ on for the love of it.

Thank you trees for the paper and thank you prismacolors for the damn fine pigments.

Much love 4 all

on discovering alignment

Back into the flow that living within a city demands of you. Back into a community of individuals following their passions from day to day. Back to the familiar with an all new perspective making home feel… well unfamiliar.

As each individual takes the leap to follow their dreams and passions daily it pulls and pushes the alignment of a community into a more authentic and vibrant space.

As communities become more authentic and vibrant I feel it is only natural for evolutionary perspective to arise within these communities due to the current need of the human mind to evolve and the situation human culture has stumbled itself into.

Perspectives arising along the lines of :

How each subtle action an individual makes creates a ripple which effects the community she or he lives within. For the good and the bad simultaneously.

How we are awakening from the illusion that humans are rulers of the earth and the communities we live within are truly habitats shared with all forms of life.

By walking with a light foot print and giving back into the habitat more then we take, regeneration occurs which is the only hope for future generations of all forms of life.

Slow is the new Fast.

Letting go of all the self graspiness and leaving the ego bullshit at the door.

Life & Death….are you ready for either……??

For those of you who know me, you will likely understand this post.

For those of you who do not know me. Please read this with an open mind and do not take it the wrong way.It is intended as food for thought and nothing else but to stimulate the mind to a place I feel many people do not visit often, if at all.

I feel this space is read by an amazing community of open minded people from many different walks of life and I think the Light & Soul Crew have a lot to thank for this! I feel due to this that I can share an experience and a lot of what has been passing through my mind in the past few weeks.

Recently I was involved in a tragic accident on a river in which a friend passed away. For those of you who have not met my self or Dean, we are right into WW kayaking and this is basically what our lives revolve around in the summer! We share a passion for running hard challenging white water and we chase this with many friends throughout the Canadian summer!

This sport takes us to remote places all around the place on a frequent basis. As kayaker’s and  like many other sports we all share a very similar inherent risk. We place ourselves in challenging situations in challenging environments with serious consequences.

The end result of these consequences across so many sports is the possibility of Death.

I like to think the majority of people who partake in these spots are very much aware of this.

A few weeks ago this end consequence played out in a very real form on Red Earth Creek near Banff. Red Earth Creek is a full on run with vertical rock walls in many spots and numerous drops. In kayaking terms it as about as committing as it gets.

I will not go into the details of the day but essentially our friend, fellow kayaker and just a absolutely AMAZING HUMAN BEING passed away. This was not due to negligence of safety, insufficient skill or any other factor other than the fact sometimes shit just goes wrong and there is very little you can do to change this other than not put yourself in these situations!!

I have personally been around the passing of a number of friends in very different situations. Cancer, car crash and serving your country’s military overseas.

Every time a friend has passed many different trains of thought are visited. The what if’s, but how, guilt, why you and various others.

My mind tends to rest of one particular outcome. No one wants to die, no one wants anyone they know to die and most of all no one wants to watch someone die. Unfortunately these things happen!!

People pass through the world, some leave a huge impact, some leave a small one, some love many, some love few, some speak out, some think a lot, some think a little, some run, some walk, some speak, some listen and some just infect everyone they meet with some special memory that is only in their mind.

That special infecting potion is just a unique passion for life that rubs off on anyone they come across! To have that passion is to truly chase what you want, to pursue what makes you happy and share that vibe unintentionally or intentionally with who ever crosses your path in this life we live.

Every time a friend has passed. No matter how close they are to me. I am reminded very sharply of how special and short this life is!!I am reminded that any day could be the last and I do not want that to be one not for the memory books. I am reminded that for my own internal harmony I need to chase what I love and make the most of what comes my way! I need to appreciate how lucky I am to have the opportunity’s I have, some even as simple as running water. No doubt I fall off this train of thought every now and then but at the end of that day this what drives me.

I believe things happen for a reason, good or bad and fair or unfair. We can control the minor things and manage things to what our perceived risk tells us to but at the end of the day we need to do what makes us happy.

Are you ready for Life or Death? Are you ready to take the bull by the horns and steer yourself on a life path that is great and satisfying to your own personal mind….

Are you ready to say heck yeah I love what I am doing and I am prepared to go out in style. Of course you don’t want go out, but if you were about to would you not want it to be doing something you insanely love doing?!!!

Everyone is different, everyone’s thing they love is going to be different in many ways!

Find that thing you love, chase it like a mad man or woman, and never stop chasing it. The way you chase it may change but you are still chasing that passion, that reward, that feeling you as an individual derive from what ever it is that you love!!!!!!

To love is to live, to live is to experience, to experience is to love…..the circle, get amongst it!

“Find your passions,

Adventures and Journeys,

Giv em a thrashin,

Discover your soul,

And let the good times roll!!!!!”

Peace
